Lough Foyle is once again demonstrating its growing importance as a driver of tourism, investment and economic opportunity for the North West, with two significant developments highlighting our region’s increasing appeal to domestic and international visitors.

Foyle Port recently welcomed the largest cruise ship ever to visit Lough Foyle, while Galgorm Collection has unveiled a major new luxury accommodation offering overlooking the lough, one of the North West’s most iconic landscapes.

The arrival of Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam marked a landmark moment for Foyle Port and the wider region. At almost 100,000 gross tonnes and 300 metres in length, the vessel became the largest cruise ship ever to call at Lough Foyle, bringing up to 3,700 passengers and crew to the North West in a single visit.

The record-breaking call represents a significant endorsement of the region’s tourism offering and growing reputation among international cruise operators. The visit also generated valuable opportunities for local tourism providers, hospitality businesses and visitor attractions, with passengers exploring destinations across the North West through a range of organised shore excursions.

Importantly, Holland America Line has already committed to return visits in 2027, 2028 and 2029, providing further confidence in the long-term growth potential of cruise tourism for the region.

Foyle Port’s Harbour Master and Operations Director, Captain Bill McCann said:

“Welcoming the Nieuw Statendam, the largest cruise ship ever to call to Lough Foyle, is a landmark moment for Foyle Port and for the wider North West region, and a reflection of the significant work that has gone into developing this destination for major international operators.

“Bringing up to 3,700 passengers and crew to the region in a single visit is a record for us, and the fact that Holland America Line has already committed to returning for the next three years tells its own story about the confidence that leading cruise lines now have in our Port facilities and local tourism offering.

“The North West has a great deal to showcase, and we look forward to welcoming many more vessels of this calibre in the years ahead.”

Meanwhile, the Roe Valley Resort part of the Galgorm Collection has announced the launch of Mussenden Lodge as part of its £20 million transformation programme.

The £1 million luxury lodge, located near Downhill and Bellarena, offers panoramic views across Lough Foyle and Binevenagh and represents the latest investment in the North West’s expanding tourism infrastructure. Accommodating up to eight guests, the premium retreat further strengthens the region’s ability to attract high-value visitors seeking world-class experiences within some of the North West’s most spectacular scenery.

The investment forms part of Galgorm Collection’s wider commitment to the North West, which includes significant upgrades at Roe Valley Resort and plans for a new championship links golf course at Bellarena.

Colin Johnston, Chief Executive Officer, Galgorm Collection, said:

“Since acquiring Roe Valley Resort, we have been focused on delivering a thoughtful and ambitious transformation that builds on the property’s strong foundations while introducing new experiences for both existing and new audiences.

“We have been delighted with the feedback from guests to date and are pleased to have welcomed visitors from across the island of Ireland, Great Britain and further afield.

“This latest phase of investment reflects our continued commitment not only to Roe Valley Resort, but to the wider North West region as a whole. We see enormous potential in this part of Northern Ireland, from its natural beauty and heritage to its growing reputation as a world-class tourism and golfing destination, and we are proud to play a role in helping to elevate that offering.”

Together, these announcements demonstrate a region building momentum. From international cruise passengers arriving through Foyle Port to luxury accommodation developments overlooking the Atlantic gateway, Lough Foyle continues to serve as both a natural asset and an economic engine for the North West.

The combined impact of cruise tourism growth, hospitality investment and destination development is helping to strengthen the North West’s position as one of Ireland’s most attractive visitor destinations.

For businesses across the North West, these developments represent tangible examples of growing confidence in the region’s future, creating opportunities for local hospitality providers, retailers and tourism operators while showcasing the unique assets that make the North West an increasingly attractive place to visit, invest and do business.

The North West’s tourism ambitions are gathering pace and momentum, and Lough Foyle remains firmly at the heart of it.
