This week’s Good News Friday celebrates two highly respected Chamber members whose contributions to business, entrepreneurship and employment have been recognised in HM The King’s Birthday Honours List 2026.

John Harkin, Director and Founder of Alchemy Technology Services, has been awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to economic development and entrepreneurship. George Fleming, Chair of Fleming Agri Products, has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to business, employment and apprenticeships.

Both honours reflect decades of commitment to growing businesses, creating opportunities, and making a significant contribution to the North West and Northern Ireland’s economy as whole.

John Harkin founded Alchemy Technology Services in Derry-Londonderry and has built the company into an internationally recognised provider of technology-enabled learning and workforce development solutions. Throughout his career, he has been a passionate advocate for entrepreneurship, innovation and regional economic growth, helping to create opportunities for individuals and businesses across Northern Ireland and beyond.

His OBE recognises not only the success of Alchemy Technology Services but also his wider contribution to supporting enterprise and economic development, particularly within the North West.

Meanwhile, George Fleming’s MBE acknowledges a lifetime of dedication to manufacturing excellence, employment and skills development through Fleming Agri Products.

Under his leadership, the Newbuildings-based company has grown into one of the leading agricultural machinery manufacturers in these islands, exporting products internationally while maintaining a strong commitment to the local economy. A particular hallmark of the business has been its long-standing investment in apprenticeships and workforce development, providing generations of young people with valuable skills and career opportunities within advanced manufacturing and engineering.

The recognition of both John and George highlights the strength of the North West business community and the important role local entrepreneurs and business leaders continue to play in driving economic growth, creating jobs and supporting future generations.

Their achievements demonstrate how businesses rooted in the region can make a significant impact not only locally but nationally and internationally.

Londonderry Chamber of Commerce extends our warmest congratulations to John Harkin OBE and George Fleming MBE on this well-deserved recognition.

Their success is a source of pride for the entire business community and a reminder of the exceptional talent, leadership and ambition that exists across the North West.

Mr Ian Crowe MBE, Past President of the Londonderry Chamber and Lord Lieutenant of the City of Derry Londonderry commented:

“The recent National Honours awarded to two members of the Chamber recognises their significant contribution to business and the community that each of them has made and the huge impact this has to the local economy and employment in our City. Both John Harkin OBE and George Fleming MBE also a Part President are thoroughly worthy of this recognition. Perhaps this will encourage more nominations for National Honours from our talented business and voluntary community in our city.”
