Derry’s independent retail sector has been recognised at this year’s High Street Heroes Awards, with two local businesses taking home awards, including the prestigious Overall Independent Retailer of the Year title.

MyDaily Gortnessy was named Overall Independent Retailer of the Year, while Chamber member Cityman Menswear was recognised as Best Fashion Retailer, highlighting the strength and diversity of Derry’s high street offering.

The awards celebrate the contribution made by independent retailers, employees and high streets to communities across Northern Ireland, with winners determined entirely through a public vote.

For Derry, the recognition provides an important platform to celebrate the businesses that contribute to the city’s retail offer while playing a wider role in the local economy. Independent retailers are an important part of our city’s business community, from supporting employment to attracting footfall.

The success of MyDaily Gortnessy and Cityman Menswear also reflects the breadth of Derry’s independent retail sector, from specialist and convenience retail to fashion and lifestyle businesses, and their recognition demonstrates the value of our local businesses building strong relationships with both customers and communities.

Derry Chamber CEO, Anna Doherty, said:

“It is fantastic to see two local businesses recognised at this year’s High Street Heroes Awards, with MyDaily Gortnessy receiving the Overall Independent Retailer of the Year award and proud Chamber member Cityman Menswear recognised as Best Fashion Retailer.

“Independent retailers are an essential part of our business community. They contribute not only through the services they provide, but also through the employment, local connections and distinctive character they bring to our city.

“This recognition, particularly through a public vote, is a strong reflection of the relationships these businesses have built with their customers and communities. We congratulate both businesses on their achievements and on providing such strong representation for Derry’s independent retail sector on the wider stage.”

Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said:

“The High Street Heroes Awards are all about giving the public the opportunity to recognise the independent retailers, employees and high streets that make such an important contribution to communities right across Northern Ireland.

“Congratulations to all of our Gold, Silver and Bronze winners and, most importantly, thank you to everyone who took the time to vote and show their support for their local High Street Heroes.”

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly said:

“Strong high streets are at the heart of strong communities. I would like to congratulate all of this year’s High Street Heroes winners and finalists for the invaluable contribution they make right across Northern Ireland.”

The recognition of MyDaily Gortnessy and Cityman Menswear provides a timely reminder of the contribution independent businesses make to the North West’s economy. Their success reflects the ambition and customer focus within the city’s retail sector and the important role these businesses continue to play in shaping a vibrant local economy.
