Derry Chamber’s Infrastructure Sub-Committee met Translink Group Chief Executive Gerard Carlin on 12th October to highlight the transport challenges affecting businesses and workers across the North West.

Chaired by Ronan Duffy, the meeting provided an opportunity to bring members’ concerns directly to Translink’s leadership, covering rail connectivity, bus services, affordability and cross-border travel.

A central focus was whether public transport enables people to get to and from work. The Chamber highlighted the importance of first and last departures, evening and weekend services, and connections that meet the needs of hospitality businesses and employers operating shift patterns.

Members also raised rail frequency and journey times between Derry and Belfast, alongside onward connections to Dublin. Discussion covered the region’s longer-term rail ambitions and the importance of progressing the preparatory work needed to support future investment.

Cross-border connectivity was another priority. The Chamber emphasised the close economic links between Derry, Strabane and Donegal, highlighting the need for better coordination between operators, clearer passenger information and more convenient connections.

The engagement forms part of the Chamber’s continuing work to ensure that transport planning reflects the needs of the North West business community. Reliable, accessible public transport supports recruitment, widens access to employment and helps businesses reach customers.

The Chamber will continue to press for practical service improvements alongside the infrastructure investment required to support the region’s growth.

Members experiencing transport difficulties that affect their business or staff are encouraged to contact the Chamber to help inform future engagement.
