Yesterday, the UK Government announced new energy support schemes for businesses and households. Find out what support will be made available in this explainer, provided by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS):

Energy Bill Relief Scheme (non-domestic):

  • A non-domestic scheme will be established in Northern Ireland, providing a comparable level of support to that of the Energy Bill Relief Scheme for Great Britain.
  • The design of the Northern Ireland scheme will be consistent with the GB scheme, with an equivalent level of support, but will take into consideration the different market arrangements in place in Northern Ireland.
  • BEIS is working with suppliers and other industry organisations to ensure the scheme works effectively for businesses and other organisations in the voluntary and public sector in Northern Ireland.
  • More information on the non-domestic support scheme will be provided by the end of September.

Domestic homes:

  • Whilst yesterday’s announcement covers household and business bills from 1 October in GB, the NI Energy Price Guarantee will take effect from November, backdated to October once the scheme goes live.

£100 additional support:

  • The government will provide a payment of £100 to households across the UK who are not able to receive support for their heating costs through the Energy Price Guarantee. This compensates for the rising costs of alternative fuels such as heating oil.
