Derry Chamber warmly welcomes the commencement of exploratory and conservation work at the historic Austins building in Derry city centre, marking an important step forward in the regeneration of one of our city’s most recognisable landmarks.

This early-stage programme focuses on detailed investigation and conservation planning, laying the foundations for a full restoration later in 2026.

The project represents a major vote of confidence in Derry’s built heritage and economic future, with funding support of £459,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund enabling this crucial first phase.

The work is also being delivered by Mullarkey Pedersen Architects, based right here in Derry. The firm’s specialist team is undertaking complex and skilled conservation work, highlighting the importance of seeing such specialised, high-value professional services being provided locally, reinforcing the depth of talent and expertise that exists in the North West.

As preparatory and conservation works at Austins get underway, the city centre remains open for business. The regeneration is widely seen as a catalyst for renewed footfall and commercial activity around The Diamond, supporting local retailers, enhancing the visitor experience, and contributing to long-term vitality.

Chair of Inner City Trust, Venerable Robert Miller FRSA,  said:

“This is the beginning of a new chapter for Austins, transforming a much-loved landmark into a place of pride, energy and opportunity once more. By tackling urban blight and drawing people back into the heart of the city, this regeneration will spark fresh life in local businesses, creating lasting benefits for our whole community.”

The progress now being made at Austins reflects the wider regeneration agenda outlined by Chamber President Steven Lindsay in remarks delivered at the 2025 AGM.

In those remarks, President Lindsay emphasised the importance of city centre regeneration, supported through partnerships such as the Inner City Trust, the City Centre Initiative and the Pride and Place project, to create vibrant urban spaces that attract people, investment and enterprise.

Derry Chamber continues to support initiatives that tackle dereliction, create skilled employment, and strengthen the local economy, and view the progress at Austins as a clear indicator of renewed momentum for city centre regeneration.
