The North West’s leadership ambitions in clean energy and innovation took centre stage this week as two major regional conferences highlighted growing momentum across the energy and technology sectors.
At the Chamber’s North West Future of Energy Conference this week, Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the region’s drive toward clean energy leadership and more inclusive economic growth. Speaking at the White Horse Hotel, she reaffirmed her commitment to improving regional balance and emphasised that the North West’s unique economic geography positions it strongly for cross-border collaboration.
Now in its seventh year, the reimagined conference focused on the role of renewable energy investment including offshore wind, green hydrogen, and major grid upgrades, in underpinning both environmental progress and wider economic transformation. Delegates also explored the skills and workforce changes required to support a net-zero future, with contributions from industry, government, education, and cross-border business leaders.
Enhanced cooperation across the North West Energy Corridor was a standout theme, underscoring the growing collaboration between the Derry, Letterkenny, and Causeway Chambers as we work towards a shared regional vision for the future of energy.
Chamber President Andrew Fleming, said:
“The North West has the ambition and the capability to lead the way in clean energy and inclusive economic growth. Our challenges and opportunities do not stop at the border that is why all-island collaboration is essential to delivering long-term prosperity for all our communities.
“This conference demonstrated the enormous potential of the North West to drive economic renewal through energy transformation. By bringing together partners from across the region and across the island, we are building the relationships, skills, and ambition needed to position the North West as a leader in the green economy.”
This week also saw Derry’s fast-growing tech sector showcased at the new TechTides Conference, which drew more than 600 participants well above its initial target of 350, for its inaugural gathering at the Millennium Forum.
The conference brought together entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and international visitors for a full day of future-focused discussion on AI, startup growth, and the changing digital landscape. Sessions spanned from women in tech and innovation, to funding challenges and the evolving role of artificial intelligence.
Taken together, both the Future of Energy Conference and TechTides conference reflect a region increasingly confident in its strengths, whether in clean energy transition or digital innovation. Both conferences underline a shared regional ambition: to build a North West that leads in clean energy, digital innovation, and collaborative economic growth.
