A major innovation partnership between Chamber Members Wafer Ltd and the North West Regional College (NWRC) was announced this week, featuring a £150,000 investment in research and development to drive advanced manufacturing.

The two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), funded by Innovate UK and Invest NI, will introduce new technologies and smart manufacturing processes at Wafer Ltd, one of Ireland’s leading suppliers to the ice cream industry.

As part of the project, a graduate mechanical engineer will be recruited to work within Wafer Ltd, supported by NWRC’s Product Design Centre, to deliver modern production methods that improve efficiency, product traceability and responsiveness to market needs.

The initiative represents another strong example of collaboration between local business and education, helping to build high-value skills, boost productivity, and promote innovation across the North West economy.

In a joint statement, Wafer Ltd and NWRC, said:
“We are delighted to collaborate on this innovative project that combines Wafer Ltd’s industry expertise with NWRC’s academic support. Together, we will enhance production efficiency, drive sustainable growth, and strengthen Wafer’s position in the market through cutting-edge design and automation.”

The KTP was developed following support through the Connected programme, which helps local companies identify opportunities for innovation and apply for national funding.

Commenting on the investment, Londonderry Chamber CEO, Anna Doherty, said:
“Collaboration is at the heart of progress in the North West. This project between Wafer Ltd and NWRC shows how local partnerships can spark innovation, create opportunities for young people, and keep our regional economy moving forward.”

The Chamber commend both Wafer Ltd and NWRC for their continued commitment to innovation and enterprise. This project is another example of how collaboration in the North West is driving opportunities across the region.
