Congratulations to Dee Conaghan, who has been awarded an OBE in His Majesty’s New Year Honours List 2025 “for services to Theatre and to Education for Adults with Learning Disabilities.”
Dee was presented with the insignia by Prince William at Windsor Castle last month, in recognition of the extraordinary work she has led at Stage Beyond Theatre Company since its founding in 2002. Under her leadership, Stage Beyond has broken down barriers, offering professional arts training and community‑led performances that celebrate the creativity and talent of adults with learning disabilities.
Dee Conaghan, reflecting on her OBE, said:
“With the right tools and support, we all can shine. We have a super team at Stage Beyond and everyone nurtures and encourages each other.
“I am happy to accept this OBE as a reflection of the profound impact and joy that drama can bring to people’s lives”.
During a follow-up visit to share in the celebrations with Stage Beyond, who are based at the Millennium Forum, the Lord Lieutenant for Derry, Ian Crowe, praised Dee’s exceptional contribution to the arts in our city.

This week we’re also delighted to celebrate Jenni Doherty, owner of Little Acorns Bookshop who was honoured as Business Person of the Year at the Derry Journal People Awards 2025. Her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to keeping independent bookshops thriving in Derry have set a sterling example for small businesses across the region.
Reacting to the accolade, Jenni noted:
“I am so honoured to be awarded the Derry Journal Business Person of the Year, and in such esteemed company with other local businesses.
Little Acorns Bookstore wouldn’t be in business if it wasn’t for the local community – of readers, writers, publishers; visiting, stocking, shopping, and supporting. Here’s to more reading, writing and creating magic! Absolutely delighted!”
These honours are not just personal achievements – they’re powerful reflections of the entrepreneurship and community spirit driving innovation across the North West. Whether it’s Dee Conaghan’s groundbreaking work in inclusive theatre or Jenni Doherty’s commitment to high-quality enterprise, each award showcases the talent and vision thriving in our region.
