Derry Chamber has welcomed two major developments which signal a bright future for the North West economy — a record rise in student numbers at Ulster University’s Magee campus and a landmark office expansion by global financial services firm FinTrU.
Ulster University’s Magee campus has experienced its largest annual increase in student numbers in over a decade. Backed by an £11.8m investment from the Department for the Economy, the campus saw enrolment rise by 510 students in 2024/25 — more than the combined growth of the previous ten years. With a campus-high of 6,000 students expected this month, the investment is not only boosting higher education opportunities but also strengthening our local economy and the talent pipeline for our local employers.
Alongside this campus growth, the financial services sector in the North West is also thriving. Chamber member FinTrU has officially unveiled its expanded and refurbished Carlisle House office in Derry/Londonderry, now its largest single office globally. The redeveloped site blends industrial heritage with cutting-edge facilities, while a new Technology Hub is set to follow next year.
Former Chamber President and FinTrU North West Site Lead Greg McCann, said:
“This expansion gives our employees access to a larger, modern office space right in the city centre. Carlisle House offers generous communal areas and a setting that reflects our values and strategic vision. This investment sends a clear message to the city and beyond. Derry/Londonderry is a thriving hub for global financial services and technology, and FinTrU is proud to be part of its continued growth.”
Anna Doherty, Chief Executive of the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce, said:
“These announcements are fantastic news for Derry and the wider North West region. The clear and evident expansion of student numbers at Magee reflects a long-awaited commitment to regional balance, and will provide a steady stream of skilled graduates for our members and local businesses for years to come.
“At the same time, FinTrU’s growth highlights the North West’s reputation as a thriving destination for global business investment. Together, these developments strengthen our economy, create jobs, and build confidence in the future of this region.”
Together, these investments show what is possible when ambition is matched with action. Derry is entering a new chapter — one defined by opportunity, innovation, and confidence in the future.
