Northern Ireland’s AI businesses have been given a direct opportunity to engage with the UK’s Sovereign AI Fund, bringing national investment and public-sector procurement opportunities closer to local founders.

The Northern Ireland launch, held at Catalyst’s Innovation Centre in Belfast on 8 October, brought together around 100 founders, investors, researchers, industry leaders and policymakers. Delivered by Sovereign AI, the Artificial Intelligence Collaboration Centre (AICC), Catalyst and People Playbook, the event included pitches from KPATH AI, Pytilia and HUMAIN to the fund’s investment team.

Sovereign AI is a £500 million government-backed venture fund designed to help British AI companies establish themselves, grow and compete internationally. Its offer combines investment with access to computing resources, support to recruit international talent and connections to research, data and public-sector opportunities. Priority areas include computing infrastructure, foundation models, health and life sciences, scientific discovery, and AI trust and assurance.

Alongside that investment offer, the Government has launched the first competitions under its £100 million Sovereign AI R&D Procurement Scheme. These focus on NHS productivity, more efficient AI computing, integrating AI across defence systems, and testing the security and resilience of AI agents.

The procurement scheme addresses a familiar obstacle for smaller technology businesses: securing an early customer. It targets solutions that have progressed beyond initial research and are ready to demonstrate their capabilities in operational settings. Upfront payments may be available where appropriate, while successful companies will retain the intellectual property they develop, supporting further commercial growth.

For Derry and the wider North West, the opportunity is to turn technical expertise into businesses with customers beyond the region. Access to investment, computing power and a first public-sector customer could help ambitious firms make that transition.

The Belfast launch is a welcome connection between Northern Ireland’s innovators and national decision-makers. North West firms developing relevant AI technologies should explore the fund’s priorities and procurement criteria, and consider how their solutions could address the challenges identified.
