Visit Derry is encouraging tourism businesses across the destination to consider taking part in a new Carbon Calculator Pilot Programme launched by Tourism NI, as part of its Sustainable Tourism Pathway.

The pilot will support up to ten tourism businesses over a 12-month period, combining group learning with individual mentoring to help participants measure and reduce their carbon footprint. To accommodate the Christmas holiday period, the deadline for Expressions of Interest has been extended to Wednesday 7 January.

Developed in partnership with EarthCheck, the sector-specific carbon calculator has been designed with tourism and hospitality businesses in mind, making carbon measurement more practical and accessible. The programme supports the tourism industry’s contribution to Northern Ireland’s Net Zero targets, including a 48% reduction in emissions by 2030 and Net Zero by 2050.

With sustainability increasingly influencing visitor choices, Tourism NI research shows that over two thirds of travellers from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland prioritise sustainability when selecting destinations. A carbon calculator offers businesses a practical tool to reduce emissions, manage energy costs and strengthen their environmental credentials.

Visit Derry encourages eligible tourism businesses to consider this opportunity and submit an Expression of Interest.
