Londonderry Chamber has warmly welcomed the appointment of local leader Gerard Carlin as Group Chief Executive of Translink, which serves as a significant boost for the North West and a strong signal of continued investment in regional connectivity.

A native of Derry, Gerard Carlin brings more than 20 years’ experience in major infrastructure delivery across rail, water, energy, and oil and gas. He currently serves as Director of Networks and Innovation at SONI and has previously held senior roles with Transport for London, London Underground and Crossrail, where he played a key role in the recovery of the programme and the successful transition of the Elizabeth Line into operation.

He also served as Head of Transformation at Northern Ireland Water, providing him with valuable cross-sector experience in some of Northern Ireland’s most critical infrastructure areas.

Welcoming the appointment, Derry Chamber said it looks forward to working closely with Gerard in his new role, particularly given the strategic importance of transport connectivity to our region’s future economic growth.

The Chamber also paid tribute to outgoing Chief Executive Chris Conway for his leadership since 2015.

Anna Doherty, Derry Chamber Chief Executive, said:

“Derry Chamber warmly welcomes Gerard Carlin’s appointment as Group Chief Executive of Translink. Gerard brings an exceptional breadth of experience across major infrastructure delivery, alongside a strong understanding of the North West, and we look forward to working closely with him in the years ahead. We also want to place on record our sincere thanks to Chris Conway for his leadership and commitment over the past decade.

“As a valued corporate partner, Translink plays a critical role in supporting economic development across the North West. Investment in a modern, reliable and well-connected public transport system will be fundamental to unlocking opportunities – particularly in supporting access to skills, employment and the continued expansion of Magee. We look forward to strengthening our collaboration to ensure the region has the connectivity it needs to thrive.”

Derry Chamber remains committed to working collaboratively with Gerard and the wider Translink team to advocate for enhanced connectivity and sustained infrastructure investment, ensuring the North West is well positioned to attract investment, support business growth and deliver inclusive, sustainable economic development.
