Robert Houlihan leads the Ulster Orchestra in the second concert of their digital series,  Siegfried and Schubert, on Friday 16 April. This engaging programme starts in one of orchestral music’s most personal moments, but wakes up to finish in bustling Schubertian style!

Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll showcases the composer at his most intimate and tender. This piece was written as a gift for his wife, and first performed as a surprise on their stairs and landing by 15 musicians on the morning of her birthday.

Dobrinka Tabakova is a Bulgarian-born, London-based composer with a strong affinity to the music of Schubert, and her shimmering and soaring Fantasy Homage to Schubert is the perfect prelude to the Austrian master’s 3rd Symphony.

Written when he was just 18, Schubert’s 3rd Symphony is packed with the influences of Haydn and Mozart, while at the same time showcasing his own burgeoning talent. Poised and charming, this piece is melodic and upbeat – perfect for Spring!

Patrick McCarthy, Ulster Orchestra’s Head of Artistic Planning and Operations, said:

“We’re delighted to now have the opportunity to perform and stream a number of classical concerts in the socially-distanced setting of the Waterfront Hall, Belfast and are looking forward to welcoming Robert back to perform with us.”

Tickets are available now on https://www.ulsterorchestra.org.uk/whats-on/ and this, along with all other Ulster Orchestra digital concerts, will be available to purchase and watch for thirty days after the performance date.
