A strong, confident and outward-looking economy in Derry and the wider North West is not optional; it is essential to the future prosperity of Northern Ireland and to balanced growth across the island of Ireland. These ambitions are not in tension. They are mutually reinforcing and grounded in economic reality.
For too long, the North West been framed in terms of disadvantage rather than opportunity. Yet Derry is already the economic and social anchor of a cross-border city region extending into and across the wider North West. Every day, people cross the border to work, study, trade, and innovate. Strengthening Derry strengthens this entire functional economic area, delivering tangible benefits on both sides of the border.
A stronger North West also means a stronger Northern Ireland. Economies overly reliant on a single city or corridor are less resilient and less inclusive. As Northern Ireland’s second city and the gateway to the North West, Derry plays a critical role in achieving balance. A thriving Derry diversifies the regional economy, expands labour markets and ensures that skills, investment, and opportunity are more evenly distributed.
Crucially, future growth must be driven from within. While external investment is important, sustainable prosperity will be built by indigenous businesses, entrepreneurs, social enterprises and institutions rooted in this place. Regions once seen as peripheral have shown what is possible when local capacity is prioritised.
The Basque Country’s transformation, built on innovation, skills, and strong institutions, demonstrates how confidence and long-term commitment can deliver high-value growth. Derry can do the same.
The foundations are already in place. A young population, growing strengths in digital and creative industries, tourism, life and health sciences, advanced manufacturing, and the expanding role of Ulster University’s Magee campus position our city well for success.
Infrastructure, connectivity, and locally driven investment – including through the University expansion and the Derry-Strabane City Deal – must be matched by ambition and belief. From an all-island perspective, a thriving North West is a gateway to the Atlantic economy, a driver of practical cross-border cooperation, and a powerful example of what balanced development can achieve.
Ultimately, a strong Derry and North West economy is not just good for this region. It is vital for Northern Ireland and strengthens the economic and social fabric of the island of Ireland as a whole.
