With the recent publication of the Department for the Economy’s 10X Economy paper, NI is about to embark on a Decade of Innovation.

Innovation is a high priority on the societal agenda both in the immediate and longer-term.

As companies prepare to build back after COVID-19and to prepare for Industry 4.0, where can the innovation journey begin?How ambitious should companies be? What supports exist in terms of research and advice?

Let’s start by showcasing the great innovation that isalready happening so as to inspire more.

Rosalind Young, Investment ManagerDerry City & Strabane District CouncilRosalind leads theDerry City and Strabane District Council’s Investment team with an outcomes-driven focus attracting new investment to the City and Region, supporting businesses to operate and grow as well as building international networks and diaspora connections.  Rosalind has worked for over 20 years within local government with experience in FDI, trade and economic development, international relations and relationship building with key stakeholders across industry, academia and public sector.Derry City and Strabane District Council is leading on the Derry-Londonderry & Strabane City Region City Deal.  Along with project delivery partners the aim of the City Deal and Inclusive Future Fund is to increase and realise the economic potential of the City Region.  Innovation, Digital and Health sits at thevery heart of the Investment Plan which will transform the City Region’s innovation and digital capability and capacity.

Dr Timothy Patterson, Founder, Heysense LtdDr Timothy Patterson is Founder of Heysense Ltd which helps UK and Irish SMEs achieve their digital strategy through innovative and affordable software development.

Founded in 2019 heysense.io builds upon +10 years of professional experience developing bespoke Applications, Sensor deployment / integration, Machine Learning / Data Science and Cloud-based computing. Our one aim is to develop high-quality software that provides clear return on investment for our customers. We are based in Cookstown, Northern Ireland, home of sausages, the Cookstown 100 and one of the longest, widest streets in Ireland.

Dr Patterson was the Knowledge Transfer Project Associate on the CDE Global and Ulster University project which will be presented today. The team developed the CDE CORE: SmartTech (Industrial Internet of Things product).

SmartTech allows live monitoring and recording of machine performance giving insights into outputs of the machine ad par performance. This can be used for many things from redesign and machine development to predicting maintenance and providing customers with a window to the performance of their plant.

DrJustin Quinn, Director of the Centre for Engineering and Renewable Energy and Senior Lecturer at the School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems at the Ulster University Magee campus.

Justin will play a key role in the establishment of the Centre for Industrial Digitalisation, Robotics and Automation (CIDRA) as part of the Derry & Strabane City Deal.
